1000 most common Icelandic words

Embarking on the journey to learn Icelandic? One of the most effective ways to make rapid progress is by focusing on the words you'll encounter most often. But which words are they? To answer that question, we've created this resource: “The 1000 Most Common Icelandic Words.”

This list isn't based on intuition; it's the result of a statistical analysis we conducted. We processed an extensive corpus consisting of a large number of contemporary Icelandic online articles, covering a wide range of topics. By analyzing real-world usage on a large scale, we could identify the vocabulary that truly forms the bedrock of the modern written language.

Icelandic is an inflected language, meaning words change their form significantly depending on their grammatical role. Simply counting every word form would lead to a lot of redundancies. That’s why we did our best to convert the various word forms found in the texts back into their base dictionary form.

Here is a table with a list of (slightly over) one thousand of the most common Icelandic words.
