Filter by word type
  1. 1.
    biti
    [verb]
    (to be)

The most fundamental verb, 'to be', is highly irregular. Pay close attention to its present tense forms (sam, si, je, smo, ste, su) and the different forms for the past (bio/bila/bilo...) and future tenses.

  2. 2.
    i
    [conjunction]
    (and)
  3. 3.
    u
    [preposition]
    (in)

This preposition usually means 'in' or 'at'. It requires the Locative case for location (u gradu - in the city) and the Accusative case for direction (u grad - into the city).

  4. 4.
    se
    [pronoun]
    (oneself)

This reflexive pronoun ('oneself') often indicates an action done to oneself or a passive/impersonal meaning. It's a clitic, meaning it has a fixed position in the sentence, usually second place.

  5. 5.
    na
    [preposition]
    (on)

Meaning 'on' or 'at', this preposition requires the Locative case for location (na stolu - on the table) and the Accusative case for direction (na stol - onto the table).

  6. 6.
    koji
    [pronoun]
    (who/which)

The relative pronoun 'who' or 'which'. It must agree in gender and number with the noun it refers to, and its case depends on its function in the relative clause (e.g., Čovjek kojeg vidim... - The man whom I see...).

  7. 7.
    od
    [preposition]
    (from/of)
  8. 8.

  10. 10.
    s
    [preposition]
    (with)

Meaning 'with', this preposition requires the Instrumental case. It changes to sa before words starting with s, š, z, ž, or difficult consonant clusters (e.g., sa mnom - with me). See also entry #36 'sa'.

  11. 11.
    a
    [conjunction]
